Manufacturer Information:
Copeland Furniture has been producing wood products and furniture since 1976. We have gradually grown over the years from a one man shop to the largest employer in our small town of Bradford, Vermont with over 100 workers producing high quality furniture. We know that our environment is, in many ways, very fragile. We are the beneficiaries of the strong stewardship ethic practiced and passed down by those who went before us. We hope that the next generation appreciates our stewardship and is inspired to continue the tradition. We hope that you can see that respect for the landscape in the furniture we build for your home – timeless designs and timeless quality. We remain a family owned and operated business committed to manufacturing high quality products in America. Copeland Makes Green Furniture Preservation and stewardship are values that run deep in Vermont. They run deep at Copeland Furniture too. Our commitment to the environment is reflected in the green furniture we design and manufacture. Here are some of the things we’re doing to make sure that our manufacturing process, from raw material procurement through manufacturing to shipping, is as green as possible. We’re FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified Copeland Furniture is one of only a few FSC certified furniture manufacturers. We work with the SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance. Under that program we work with suppliers who can certify that the wood we purchase from them comes from forests that: are not threatened do not have high conservation significance do not contain genetically modified trees. SmartWood audits our purchase records annually. Whenever feasible, we purchase wood that is harvested from FSC certified woodlots and processed by FSC-certified sawmills. The Northern Forest is among the healthiest in the world and is actually growing in terms of standing biomass. We’re able to use lumber that grows within 500 miles of our factory reducing the amount of fossil fuel consumed (and carbon dioxide created) by raw material transportation. Our heirloom-quality furniture has less environmental impact than a piece that will fail or has a “fashion life.” We use time-tested joinery and construction methods, combined with durable finishes and quality hardware. We comply with strict regulations on air quality emissions, hazardous waste, worker safety, and storm water runoff. We work to recycle and reduce packaging material and volatile solvents. We participate with the New England power pool to generate our own electricity during peak usage times, helping to reduce the capacity requirements of the electric utility companies. We can’t claim credit for it, but almost none of Vermont’s electrical power comes from fossil fuel burning generation plants – only during occasional peak demand periods. A water born, formaldehyde free finish may be specified for all Copeland Furniture pieces. These finishes are every bit as durable as our traditional catalyzed lacquer with the added benefit of drastically reduced VOC emissions at the factory and off-gassing at the home.
